Manga Bakura vs Fandom Bakura by Achiru-et-al Manga Bakura vs Fandom Bakura by Achiru-et-al
A random comic I did over at 's house.

Basically, there are so many stupid rumors out there. Okay, it's fun at first, but it gets repetitive!!! The fandom is fun, but to a certain extent.

Bakura is not abused by his other self every day, nor is it possible for him to take physical form. For what I know, Bakura doesn't even know he has a 'yami', he might have an idea, but he refers to it as "a voice" (Correct me if I'm mistaken).

As far as I know, he lives in an appartment, room 601, and it has not been said that his family is alive. We know what his father did at one point, but we don't know if he is still alive. We know he had a little sister that's dead, and he writes to her.

There are only two instances where Bakura was greatly "hurt". One in Monster World (once again, please correct me if I'm wrong), where yami no Bakura was trying to win a yami no game, he stabbed his left (or was it right?) hand on the castle tower, and second, in Battle City, when he made a deal with Mariku. Does that seem like constant abuse? I don't think so.

Bakura is pretty much clueless half the time. I did notice he seems to have a sixth sense to pick up trouble, especially noticeable in the chapter with Otogi. He wasn't afriad of the Phantomime either (he walked up and tried to scare it? I dunno).

Excuse the rant.

One more thing to mention though, he has no screen time in the anime.

Hmm... now to get back to my other work and I still have three chapters of TWINS to draw. =D

Out of the 3 Yamis, Bakura changed the least when possessed by Yami Bakura.  It was just his personality that changed, but same voice, same hair & clothes lol.  I agree with this comic!! ;)

To me, Bakura was more "at one" with the spirit of the ring.  There were times where Yami Bakura would talk in good Bakura's voice and it was sooo creepy! XD  Or when Nice-Bakura would talk to Yugi and his friends then suddenly turn around and smile evilly.  Unlike Yami and Yugi who had a clearer distinction between them.  I think Bakura is less aware of being possessed and actually gets into the evil spirit role better.
Thumbs up to this comic!! :iconthumbsupplz:

I think that in the fandom the reason Ryou has been portrayed as being abused is that the spirit of the ring has shown absolutely no remorse or pity when it comes to his temper. As you pointed out he did hurt Ryou in monster world. He did that because Ryou was defying him. So in the fandom, especially things like fanfictions, Ryou is usually hurt for the same reason. I think if the story line of Yugioh revolved around the two (and it wasn't run by 4kids) we would see a lot more abuse because in order to make it interesting we'd have to see a lot more confrontation.

And I believe Ryou knows he has a Yami, if you watch season 0 the spirit of the ring sort of explains himself in the monster world episode. Also in season 5 he's tormented by the spirit of the ring, who knows if he understands that's his yami though.

Idk, those are just opinions, thought I'd throw 'em out there. I don't particularly like the fan portrayal where Ryou is constantly abused because Bakura is out for blood constantly, because he doesn't seem that way to me. Only when he feels like he's loosing control or being defied by his host does he seem to strike back.

In the first version of the anime Ryou impaled his own hand on a game piece in order to keep his yami from hurting his friends. So maybe the spirit of the ring figures Ryou doesn't mind getting hurt so long as he's the only one. Plus, considering the number of scars on his past self's body, I'm pretty sure the spirit of the ring has a high tolerance for pain.

O.o I love Manga Bakura. He was a bit more badass then the fandom makes him out to be. After all, he did stab his FREAKING HAND to save his friends. Pretty cool.

I always try to write him as a badass just oppressed. =/

This is really good! A really good description of how the fandom universe makes him out to be.

i understand you on this. poor characters, also none of their fans truly understand them(i'm one too D:). especially what with calling them gay for eachother and all. i know that wasnt an example you were pinpointing here, but honestly, at first the yaoi was funny to think about, little jokes and whatnot, but now it's just sickening....

Finally, someone sets the record straight! But all four of them are perfectly lovely characters when written well~

And none of them have any decent screen time in the anime. Why is this? Why?

THEY HAVE NO DECENT MERCHANDISE EITHER. Auuuggghhhh... I still want a Bakura backpack. Or a T-Shirt. But no. There's just Yami no Yugi on them. And maybe Jounouchi and Kaiba or Yami no Marik. WHY. WHY???

WHAT?! Only Yami no Yugi and maybe Kaiba are worthy of being on a T-Shirt or a backpack! Why are Jonouchi and Yami no Marik on them?!

Calm down, calm down... maybe there's cute little chibi figurines of Bakura somewhere.

The reason why is that Kaiba, Jounouchi, Yami no Marik and Yami no Yugi were the top final duelists in the Battle City Saga, which was probably when Yu-Gi-Oh!'s popularity was at its peak. Bakura was, unfortunately, knocked out in the semi-finals, not to mention didn't come back until AFTER ALL THE FILLER.

I don't want a figurine. I want something wearable. The best I can hope for is something custom-made.

That's silly. Jounouchi and Bakura should switch places.

I was commenting to myself that time, but you have a point. Maybe the internet can help us...

*laughs* OMG XD I love this!! It's so true!

And yes, I must correct you! Ryou knows about his alter ego. On pegasus island he makes kind of a deal with him to save yugi and his friends. - Which means Bakura told him, his friends would never got out of the room where they were trapped if he wouldn't put the ring back on. =) You can read it in volume 12. =D
But I don't know if they talked again I haven't finished reading the manga yet. ( But I guess he don't know about Bakura like Yugi does about Yami.)

I know. Ryou just knows him as a "voice" in his head though. Nothing more, at least, he has no concept of the spirit taking a ghost form or another bodily form apart from his.

I feel like I commented on this a while ago... but I can't remember so I will again! lol.
I'm glad someone noticed this as well, there are a lot of extreme cases where the fandom is just over the top ridiculous.
But you also have to consider that in the fanfiction, Yami Bakura has a body as well... so he has no use for Ryou Bakura to be alive and well. The reason people make him into an abusive "roomate" is because he IS a sadistic individual. Ryou only becomes like the fandom Ryou due to a lot of abuse, which at that point is not unfathomable.
At least that's how I am able to tolerate BakuraxRyou fanfiction... I just try to make logic out of it like that! ;P

Ha ha, this comic is so old now. But I agree with you, sometimes logic is possible, but when I drew this there were plenty of fics where they did share a body, and for the especially many fics where they had separate bodies, their personalities remained flatter than paper. Bakura may be a sadistic character, but he has a brain in his skull and I'd like to think he could be more creative and pull more surprises that show a level of say, planning and thought. It's okay to be an angry brute then and now, but all the time? In one fic after another and after another? Geez. That gets old, fast!

Yes, there are still those fics that aren't thought out or well written at all... But there are good ones out there! ;D (Hidden deep within the darkest part of fanfiction websites... Haha.) :) Thanks for the reply!
