Manga Bakura vs Fandom Bakura by Achiru-et-al Manga Bakura vs Fandom Bakura by Achiru-et-al
A random comic I did over at 's house.

Basically, there are so many stupid rumors out there. Okay, it's fun at first, but it gets repetitive!!! The fandom is fun, but to a certain extent.

Bakura is not abused by his other self every day, nor is it possible for him to take physical form. For what I know, Bakura doesn't even know he has a 'yami', he might have an idea, but he refers to it as "a voice" (Correct me if I'm mistaken).

As far as I know, he lives in an appartment, room 601, and it has not been said that his family is alive. We know what his father did at one point, but we don't know if he is still alive. We know he had a little sister that's dead, and he writes to her.

There are only two instances where Bakura was greatly "hurt". One in Monster World (once again, please correct me if I'm wrong), where yami no Bakura was trying to win a yami no game, he stabbed his left (or was it right?) hand on the castle tower, and second, in Battle City, when he made a deal with Mariku. Does that seem like constant abuse? I don't think so.

Bakura is pretty much clueless half the time. I did notice he seems to have a sixth sense to pick up trouble, especially noticeable in the chapter with Otogi. He wasn't afriad of the Phantomime either (he walked up and tried to scare it? I dunno).

Excuse the rant.

One more thing to mention though, he has no screen time in the anime.

Hmm... now to get back to my other work and I still have three chapters of TWINS to draw. =D

I think that in the fandom the reason Ryou has been portrayed as being abused is that the spirit of the ring has shown absolutely no remorse or pity when it comes to his temper. As you pointed out he did hurt Ryou in monster world. He did that because Ryou was defying him. So in the fandom, especially things like fanfictions, Ryou is usually hurt for the same reason. I think if the story line of Yugioh revolved around the two (and it wasn't run by 4kids) we would see a lot more abuse because in order to make it interesting we'd have to see a lot more confrontation.

And I believe Ryou knows he has a Yami, if you watch season 0 the spirit of the ring sort of explains himself in the monster world episode. Also in season 5 he's tormented by the spirit of the ring, who knows if he understands that's his yami though.

Idk, those are just opinions, thought I'd throw 'em out there. I don't particularly like the fan portrayal where Ryou is constantly abused because Bakura is out for blood constantly, because he doesn't seem that way to me. Only when he feels like he's loosing control or being defied by his host does he seem to strike back.

In the first version of the anime Ryou impaled his own hand on a game piece in order to keep his yami from hurting his friends. So maybe the spirit of the ring figures Ryou doesn't mind getting hurt so long as he's the only one. Plus, considering the number of scars on his past self's body, I'm pretty sure the spirit of the ring has a high tolerance for pain.

O.o I love Manga Bakura. He was a bit more badass then the fandom makes him out to be. After all, he did stab his FREAKING HAND to save his friends. Pretty cool.

I always try to write him as a badass just oppressed. =/

This is really good! A really good description of how the fandom universe makes him out to be.
